Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa)
Spain's top appellation tier — held by Rioja and Priorat alone.
Denominación de Origen Calificada — DOCa, or DOQ in Catalan — is the highest tier of Spain's appellation system, above DO. Only two regions hold it: Rioja, promoted in 1991, and Priorat (as DOQ), in 2000.
The requirements are demanding. A region must have been a DO for at least ten years, all wine must be bottled at source, prices must consistently exceed the national average, and every wine faces stricter quality control than at DO level.
In practice
- The bottling-at-source rule is the practical teeth: no bulk shipment of the region's wine for bottling elsewhere.
- Rioja's promotion followed decades of investment and a reputation built on long oak ageing; Priorat's followed the 1990s revival led by a handful of producers on its steep llicorella slate.
- Both retain their own Consejo Regulador and their own ageing categories.
- Vino de Pago is not a higher tier so much as a parallel one: single estates, ranked at the same level.

Why only two
The bar is high by design, and the political appetite for promotion has been limited. Ribera del Duero, Rías Baixas and Jerez are all obvious candidates on quality grounds; none has been promoted. Part of the reason is that DOCa status brings obligations — the source-bottling rule in particular is unwelcome in regions with a large bulk trade.
There is also a familiar structural problem: an appellation covering thousands of growers cannot easily guarantee that every bottle deserves a top-tier label. Rioja itself is a live example, with an internal debate about whether the region's single-vineyard Viñedo Singular category adequately distinguishes its best wines.
