Phylloxera
The root-feeding aphid that destroyed Europe's vineyards in the 19th century — and the reason vines are grafted.
Phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae) is a tiny aphid native to eastern North America that feeds on grapevine roots. American Vitis species evolved alongside it and tolerate the damage. The European wine vine, Vitis vinifera, has no defence: the feeding wounds become infected, the root system fails, and the vine dies within a few years.
Introduced to Europe in the 1860s on imported American vines, it destroyed most of the continent's vineyards within three decades — the Great French Wine Blight. The eventual solution was grafting: vinifera fruiting wood on American or hybrid rootstock, which is how nearly every vine on earth is planted today.
In practice
- Grafting is the only durable control; chemical treatment failed, and flooding or sandy soils work only in specific places.
- Rootstock choice does far more than resist phylloxera — it also manages vigour, drought tolerance, lime tolerance and nematodes. See the rootstocks and grafting guide.
- The blight reshaped the wine map: marginal regions were abandoned, hybrid varieties spread, and appellation law grew out of the fraud that followed the shortage.

Why grafting works
Phylloxera has a complex life cycle with root-feeding and (on American species) leaf-feeding forms. On vinifera roots the feeding sites become necrotic and secondary infection kills the vine. On American rootstock — V. riparia, V. rupestris, V. berlandieri and their crosses — the root walls off the damage and the vine survives.
The graft union sits just above soil level: American roots below, vinifera above, so the fruit is still Cabernet or Chardonnay.

The exam angle
- Know the sequence: American vines imported → phylloxera arrives → vineyards die → grafting adopted → appellation law and hybrid experimentation follow.
- Distinguish phylloxera (a root aphid) from downy and powdery mildew (fungi, also American imports of the same era).
- Note that rootstock is chosen for several reasons at once — phylloxera is the historical one, drought and lime tolerance the practical modern ones.
