Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?
Botanically it's a fruit — it develops from a flower and carries seeds. 'Vegetable' is a culinary category, not a botanical one, which is why tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers are fruits by botany but vegetables on the plate.
What does F1 hybrid mean?
An F1 hybrid is the first-generation cross of two distinct parent lines, bred for uniformity and vigour. Seeds saved from F1 plants don't come true to type, which is why growers repurchase them each season.
Why do some vegetables brown when cut?
Enzymatic browning. When cells are damaged, the enzyme polyphenol oxidase reacts with phenolic compounds and oxygen to form brown pigments. Acid, such as lemon juice, or a quick blanch slows it by disabling the enzyme.
